PR Card Renewal

PR Card Renewal

PR Card Renewal: Permanent residents must have a valid permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. Without one, you may not be able to board. When you show it, it should be valid. It is valid until the expiry date listed on the card. You have to apply for a new one if it has expired. Even if it expires, you are still a permanent resident. It is usually issued for five years, but can sometimes be issued for one year instead. To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous.

You can only renew your PR card in Canada. PR cards are not sent to non-Canadian addresses and third parties can’t get them for you. You can only apply for a PRTD from outside Canada.

You can apply for a PR card renewal in the following cases:

  • Your card has expired or will expire in less than 9 months
  • Your card is lost, stolen, or destroyed
  • You need to update your card to reflect your change of name legally, change of your gender designation and/or correct your date of birth.

Documents required:

  • In case of renewal of PR card, a photocopy of it. If you want to replace a card because it is damaged or the information on it is wrong, you need to send the card with your application.
  • A clear copy of your valid passport or travel document, or the passport or travel document you held at the time you became a permanent resident
  • Two photos as per photo specifications asked for
  • A copy of the receipt for the processing fee, and
  • An honest declaration if your PR card was stolen, lost, destroyed
